book blurb

One day you held my hand. One day you loved me.

Then you were gone.

At sixteen, I lost the only love I’d ever known. Thrown back into the foster system, pregnant and alone, I prayed that you’d come for me and save me from life’s cruelties. Only the next time I saw you, it was too late.

Doing what I needed to do to provide for my son, we were finally brought face to face. It should have been the best day of my life, but it was far from it. It was the worst.

That day a monster took me and held me captive.

I begged for my life. I prayed for my son. I dreamt of you, the memories keeping me alive.

You finally came for me. You were my heart. My Salvation.
But sometimes the heart is too damaged, too broken, to be saved.

And sometimes monsters have a way of coming back to haunt me.

*This is a dark story. It is intended for mature audiences. If you need a trigger warning then this book isn’t for you. I have other books of mine that I’d recommend like Current or Tainted by Crazy, but not this one.

Christ! Who was this woman in front of me? I broke from our kiss even more confused. She was so high. I wasn't even sure she knew it was me, and then as I stared at her, and asked her what the hell she was on, she called me Enrico.

Fucking Enrico.

If I was pissed before, I was even more so now. I wanted to hit something, and I wanted to kill Enrico. I needed to get away from Charlie before I did something seriously fucked up.

I started to move away from her when she slurred, “Gun, slys yours.”

What the fuck did that even mean?

My temper couldn't take it. “Jesus fucking Christ, Charlie! You’re fucking stoned,” I yelled. My blood boiled.

“‘Rico, dance,” she mumbled, not making any sense. She looked afraid, but I didn’t know what to make of any of it. All I heard was Enrico saying she was his and she kept repeating Enrico’s name. I’d loved her and held her on a pedestal for so long, and she was a fucking drug lord’s tweaked out pussy.

Love, love, LOVE this book! New to me author, Abby McCarthy, blew me away with Cut Wide Open. First and foremost, their story beginning in their childhood was so incredibly perfect. When I say childhood, I don't mean high school. That in itself created such richness and purity to their anything but story. The plot itself isn't anything brand spanking new to this genre. I mean, it's been done before but...truth be told...most of the time it lacks the one thing that Cut Wide Open carries in spades and that's heart.
Be warned, this story took an unexpected, dark turn. Some parts were, indeed, hard to read but again, even in the darkest of times, there's a richness in the flow of the storyline that kept it from feeling as though it was all for the shock and awe. Gunner is simply delish but carries the world on his shoulder. He's the ultimate alpha male with a cautious vulnerability that can sometimes make him impulsive and therefore a bit unstable. Grey characters work for me. Always.
Charlie's a strong heroine who has been to hell, back and to hell yet again. The girl wasn't given much of a chance from the word 'go' yet she never completely broke. I never felt sorry for her and that's important to me considering my favorite genre's are often overflowing with pansy ass females who can't handle their own.
Even though it made perfect sense, her nickname didn't quite work for me. That's a personal preference kind of thing though and didn't interfere with my enjoyment of the story itself. On a side note, the nod to Sons of Anarchy and the subtle hint that as I read about Gunner, I should keep in mind that he resembles Jax...yeah, good call. Overall a great read and I can't wait to see what's next from Ms. McCarthy!
***Please heed to the authors warning. There are extremely dark elements to this story and in some cases go into great detail. May prove difficult for some readers.

A first kiss that changed everything.

Killian Kane.

He was the most feared guy in high-school.

Guarded. Angry. A fighter.

But when I caught him watching me with his captivating green eyes I saw something more. Something protective and kind.

He warned me to stay away from him.

I did.

Until I didn’t and he kissed me. A knee weakening, body tingling kiss that left me breathless.
And scared the hell out of me.

And then…

He warned me never to come near him again or next time he wouldn’t let me go.

That was eleven years ago.

We aren't teenagers anymore. He has probably forgotten me.
He’s a famous rock star now. I’m a dance instructor with a broken dream and desperate for a job.

So, when we cross paths again I don't expect him to remember me.

He does.

And his warning eleven years ago? I'm about to find out exactly what that meant.

I want to be Ms. Nashoda Rose when I grow up.
The prologue to Kept from You is EVERYTHING! I love how such a strong foundation was laid yet what would come of it could have gone in many different directions. The power of a first kiss...I have to admit, I do love stories that begin in high school even though I no longer read YA novels. Killian Kane, with his Irish lilt, was the resident bad ass and Savvy tried the best she could to stay off of his radar. She didn't quite succeed but just as they were crossing one an other's paths, tragedy took Savvy away.
Fast forward a few years and both are all grown up, living two very different lives and when Savvy finds herself near rock bottom, she turns to a long ago high school acquaintance to hopefully, put in a good word for her. This, is when all hell breaks loose. Can I just take a moment to praise ALL THAT IS KILLIAN?! He is magically delicious indeed. His vulnerability, boyish charm, dominance and teasing ways will keep the reader fully engaged and rooting for him, all. the. way. Love the author, love the series, Kept From You did not disappoint! Perfection.
