"I'm sorry."~Jon

^ ^ ^ may not seem like much but trust, it'll get ya!

Black Bullet is book 2 of  The Order of the Senary series by L.D. Rose. You can find my review for book 1, Releasing the Demons, HERE. It's been a year since I read book 1 and so my first thought when I began reading Black Bullet was, "Where's the recap?" As you can see by my rating, I really enjoyed this installment, however, it took me a minute to fall in line with everything because I was scrambling to remember these characters and the world they live in. Key terms can become too repetitive and in this case, 'grey matter', I think would have worked better had it been used more sparingly and assigned to ONE character only. That way it could have been more of a character trait verses an author trait, if that makes sense...
With that being said, the storytelling is very vivid and the characters are fascinating.

My random plus...Jon's name. I LOVE that despite his new life, he still remains Jon. It's simple, classic and refreshing to have a paranormal leading man have a normal name. I was a little the fence until he showed up with dinner. That scene was HUGE in showing his humanity and vulnerability. Until that point, I wasn't sold on Lawan either, not up until that point. Don't get me wrong, there's nothing like a bad-ass heroine but this broken hybrid was quite suspect early on. Once she and Jon were placed in a more typical, one on one, interaction, both characters began to shine and their chemistry with one another jelled.

Both characters have been severely damaged in their not so distant pasts and trusts absolutely no one. I liked the real life issues, addiction and self loathing that was woven into this vampy tale. Jon and Lawan's story is raw, tragic and will definitely tug at your heartstrings. Strangely enough, neither was my favorite character. That title would have to be shared between Oscar the oh so fierce black kitty and the mysterious Rome. There is one, would be, teeny tiny scene where he displays a simple emotional gesture towards Jon and yeah, if you blink, you'll miss it but OMG...favorite scene of the WHOLE BOOK!

Can't wait for book 3!
