The porch boards creaked behind me. I spun, but not fast enough and a hand clamped over my mouth. I was yanked backward to land against a hard chest then dragged into the darkness of the far corner of the porch where the light failed to illuminate and a tree concealed us from the street.

My scream came out muffled and barely audible.

“Shhh,” he murmured against my ear.

His warm breath wafted over the side of my neck and goose bumps popped along my skin. But it wasn’t from fear, well maybe a little, but it was more an awareness. Like my body awakened to his touch.

“They put a man on you.”

Ernie. He’d seen Ernie. Connor managed to get by an ex-navy SEAL. It shouldn’t surprise me. He excelled at being invisible. But the question was had Ernie seen him?

“He’s good. Took two hours before I had the chance.” And he’d always been patient. “You going to stay quiet if I remove my hand?”

I did my best to nod, but his grip on me was constricting and I only managed a slight dip of my chin. His hand slid from my mouth to the curve of my neck where his fingers enclosed, not harsh, but with purpose.

His rough whisper rumbled, “Can’t leave yet. Tried to. Bike found its way back here.” His body stiffened. “I don’t know what the hell I’m doing.”

Oh, God. I squeezed my eyes shut as tears pooled. I was uncertain what he’d do to me right now. He was on edge, but I couldn’t stop the overwhelming need to curl into his arms and take his pain away.

His body stiffened and his forearm across my breasts squeezed. I whimpered under the pressure, but didn’t struggle.

“I’m sorry. Fuck, I’m so sorry about your family, sweet-baby.”

My breath locked and a tear teetered then fell. Wetness trailed down my cheek. I hadn’t heard him call me that in eleven years and it was as if I were back there with him, falling in love all over again.

His fingers splayed on my neck gently applied more pressure. It wasn’t restricting, but it was controlling and I knew he’d easily cut off air if he wanted to. But I trusted that Connor would never willingly hurt me.

It was the graze of his lips on the edge of my jaw that sent my heart rocketing and my belly into a perpetual whoosh. Confusion and desire clashed as my body and mind fought against one another.

“You should’ve chosen me,” he murmured.

I had chosen him. Everything I’d done was me choosing him. But that wasn’t what he was talking about.

“You should’ve chosen me,” he repeated then nibbled on the lobe of my ear, his teeth grazing the sensitive skin. “Why? Why didn’t you kill me instead?”

My rating: 3 out of 5 stars

"Don't make me the King of the Damned, Kara, Please."~Rune

***Please note, copy provided by the author in exchange for an honest review***
COVER-5 stars, easily! It isn't like something similar hasn't been done before, and often, yet everything singe thing about this cover just works. Perfect.

As for the story itself, I may be in the minority here, but it was just 'ok' for me. I didn't hate it, not by any means. I just didn't love it. Not like I thought I would. Years ago, I read another work by this author and just fell in love. Ms. Sage was immediately added to my 'I WILL READ ANYTHING YOU WRITE' list. Even though The Last Valkyrie didn't wow me, my list remains unedited.

My biggest problem was that I didn't care for our heroine Kara. In fact, I really, REALLY disliked her and found her to be immature, needy and flat out annoying. I guess I'm just over this type of storyline where the heroine goes from gum smacking, "omg he's so hot" moments to "I am woman, hear me roar!", all in the blink of an eye. These aren't specifics, mind you, just explaining the vibe I got. Add to the fact that I only liked Zane (one of our two male leads) for about 2 seconds, could say I struggled a bit. I'm a whore for the romance and I need it sprinkled throughout. I felt like the pacing there was a little choppy and possibly added to my inability to really feel anything for Zane whatsoever. There was some repetitiveness that worked my nerves a bit. V-thing, K-thing etc and had there been just one more reference to her 'gape', I may have just completely flipped my shit.

Enter Rune. YES!!! Team Rune ALL. THE. WAY. Rune, with a side of Axel and the far too few interactions between the Gods, carried this book for me. Rune was my ultimate standout. Their entire world can come crashing down around them but as long as Rune remains standing, I'm good with that! Will I read book 2? Absolutely. In fact, the tentative release date is on my birthday (Aug. 8th)!!! My hope is to find something likeable in Kara. I need to see her as worthy of her title. Zane, meh.  and lastly, but most certainly not least, even MORE Rune!

My rating: 2.5 out of 5 stars

Could I force her if she refused in order to save her life? Or was I killing her by doing this"~Balen

Sigh...I don't understand what happened here. Nashoda Rose easily makes my top 5. If she writes it, I will read it, no questions asked. I may not always love each and every character but the world, the writing style, won me over in her Tear Asunder series. Stygian? Not so much...

I'm not saying it's a horrible book but it didn't even remotely deliver in the way I've come to expect from this author. First and foremost, it had Black Dagger Brotherhood written all over it. Granted, in this genre, there are many of which a hot group of guys all live under the same lavish roof, all with special powers and varying quirks and haunted pasts. Unfortunately, Stygian wasn't able to set itself apart. When I was introduced to one of their enemies (Maggots...) and discovered they smell of apples, yeah, I was damn near done. The character names were almost comical and the 'alpha mode' that was supposed to make a couple of these guys oh so hot, didn't. Assholes mostly, and I wasn't interested. The story was choppy and it felt rushed. Even the big reveal, the secret between Balen and Danni, fell flat. Again, I LOVE this author but this was a head scratcher.

It wasn't all bad. In fact, the beginning pulled me in immediately but after that, it was downhill and never fully recovered. There were bits and pieces that were pure poetry, beautiful, raw and demanded attention. Two seconds later, I wanted to start skimming. I couldn't find a balance. This installment aside, I will continue with this series, with this author and hope for the best!

Title: Backfire
Series: A Vigilantes Novel
Author: Keri Lake
Genre: Romantic Suspense
Release Date: Summer 2016
No matter how unbreakable he may seem, every man has a weakness.
A year ago, my home became a bloodstained crime scene. That night marked the beginning of my hell—the same night I was tortured by my enemies and tossed into an underground prison to die.
They failed. I survived.
Now that I’m free, only one motive burns in my soul: revenge.
Lucky for me, they think Jase Hawkins is dead. Maybe I am. I’ve got nothing but a cold, merciless rage, and Black Betty, the sharp steel blade that never leaves my side.
Then she drifts into my life.
Lucia wants answers—so much so, she’s willing to fall into the darkness where my enemies lie in wait, to kill her for what she knows.
Or to take her for the depraved fantasies her body alone can rouse in a man’s mind.
Me? I want her for the fire in her touch that feeds my addiction, forces me to feel what has become numb, but my appetite for bloodshed runs deeper than flesh.
For my own sanity, I’ve vowed to stay away from her. Because she’s my only weakness, an obsession that leaves me craving more—one that could make even the most steadfast plan backfire.
