"For the first time, in a long time, I found myself desperate for someone to save me."

A Blaze of Sun is the 5th installment of author Bella Forrest's A Shade of Vampire series. First up, the cover. Yes. I love the cover theme for this series and they only seem to get better as we go. As for the story itself, I feel a little torn with this one. I've mentioned in previous reviews that I find it hard to categorize this series. It's YA yet...not. There isn't an over abundance of sex or language but the violence level has always stayed true and believable when it comes to my idea of paranormal. These aren't dainty, gentle vamps. Throughout this entire series, this has been a plus, a HUGE plus, but in A Blaze of Sun, the balance felt a bit off for me. The use of the term heck verses hell and terms like pain in the neck verses pain in the ass didn't work for me. Not to mention, and I have to be careful not to spoil here, there is a making love reference during a scene that was ANYTHING BUT. Sure they're teens (18 and forever 18) but still.

The world itself is fascinating and I love that the reader is getting a better glimpse at the supporting cast. A side love triangle and a curious new character who sets up the next book all but stole the spotlight away from our lead couple. That would have been okay with me had I not felt like Derek and  Sophia lost their "spark". That special something about the pairing wasn't as strong this time around and the timing stunted the flow for me. This book was life altering for Derek and Sofia both as a couple and as individuals but I couldn't quite connect with them as much as the story called for and some of their biggest moments felt a little anticlimactic. With that being said, there were a couple of twists and turns that I did NOT see coming and loved every minute of it. Derek is tested greatly in A Blaze of Sun and has some things done to him that could have, should have, opened a whole new aspect of the storyline yet, it appears to have been glossed over, forgotten, with Sophia none the wiser. I could be wrong, there may be more on that later (I hope so).

While I can't say that this installment grabbed me as tightly as the previous ones throughout this series, I still anticipate what is to come, who will rise and who will fall and who my next favorite love to hate character will be!

Lucas Caige is a man with a haunting past. A warlock took his brother from him fifty years ago and he's spent his life outrunning that dark magic. The Hunt, Book Four-Byron Caige has been a prisoner for the last fifty years of his supernaturally long life. Just when he gives up hope of ever knowing freedom again, he is unwittingly rescued by the very same woman who only wants to see him dead. She’s also Byron’s dormant.

As war breaks out amongst the otherworldly of Earth and threatens the existence of entire races, Kat is faced with a terrible decision. Should she give up her cause and believe Caige when he professes his innocence? Or should she fight him and possibly avenge her father’s taken life – even while she forfeits her own?

4 out of 5 stars

This was a wonderful great read! I wouldn't call this a short read, nor a long one. I read it in one sitting, cuddled up next to the boyfriend as he watched football, in about 6 hours. I laughed, and gasped at the twist and turns throughout this book. The one liners! I was a giggle monster, the bf and his buddy were looking at me like I was crazy!

"Let me tell you something. The living don't know jack about the dead."

Callie Taylor, she was tortured and murdered and she has no idea why she's stuck in Abramsville, Alabama instead of her hometown of Dallas, Texas. She can't talk anyone, no one can see her and she's stuck in this small town. Literally, if she tries to cross over the county line she POPS right to the town center. She finds herself almost "befriending" the towns folk. She "haunts" one house on one day and another another day. Mostly watching TV.

Something terrible happens to one of the families she enjoys being around the most, and she is now on a mission to find someone to help her prove the innocence of an innocent man. Enter Ashara who initially wants nothing to do with Callie or her mission. Ashara's "Maw Maw" or Mrs Adelaid, on the other hand has other things in mind. Later we welcome Stephen with open arms. And this begins their journey.

Between Ashara and Maw Maw's one liners....Maw Maw was definitely a favorite. She held nothing back and just said what was on her mind and her mind worked a lot quicker than her looks would lead you to believe. And believe me, Maw Maw let Ahsara know how much she approved of Ashara's "white boy" haha!

This was a great read, fun and something I'd never really read before and would definitely recommend to friends.

Callie to Maw Maw "Nope, I'm stuck to you, so I'm just sitting here waiting for you to die so you can drag my bony white ass up to heaven."

"The world is rarely what we expect. There are many things beyond...explanation."

When Ms. Hussey contacted me in regards to reading and reviewing her latest book, it was indeed a no brainer. If that name sounds familiar it is because she is the author of the La Luxure series, you can check out my 5 star review HERE.

Lets talk cover. I'm not in love with it. It isn't bad but I think it fails to do the book justice. New Orleans and all things voodoo sets the stage for this haunting read but Villere House also possesses a tale of romance both old and new that is laced in tragedy and uncertain. The romance lover in me would have much preferred a cover that represented that aspect of the book a bit more.

Our heroine, Lottie (aka Charlotte) is in town with a couple of friends from college. I use that term loosely because Amanda is a mediocre friend at best and borderline useless. Sam, well she is completely useless. Nothing more than a walking, breathing after school special-YOU WON'T FIND THESE CRABS ON SPECIAL AT JOE'S CRAB SHACK BOYS AND GIRLS...

In the land of paranormal, you gotta love the pull. That nudge that you can't quite place that leads you here, maybe there...Villere House takes that up and notch and poor Lottie is damn near driven out of her mind trying to understand what is happening to her and why. She is hearing and doing things that are out of her control, no longer just dreams. there a boy? Of course there's a boy! Xavier is delish, with an equally delish slightly older brother and a Grandmere and mother that are basically bat shit crazy so obviously, I dug those two.

In some scenes, the attempt to "haunt" the reader struggled, yet at other times, I was pleasantly shocked by some of the characters knee jerk actions. As mentioned, there is romance, both new and old. That's where my attention held, especially the old romance. I wish there had been more. It was so enchanting and beautifully written, not to mention taboo for that time in history. The new romance didn't hold quite the same charm. It felt a bit choppy to me. I'm not sure how one goes from "oh my does he like me?" to a full on blow job cause ya is short.

Cameos. YES!!! I won't say the who, when or why but I loved that some of my more familiar characters made an appearance. What was even more impressive was how they were woven into the story. We have one scene where, well....let's just say that otherwise, NO...she wouldn't have gotten discharged that easily. I'm not always a fan of books that are co-authored. In some cases you can actual feel that shift of the pen. That isn't the case with Villere House which is always a huge plus. My interest is peaked so I'll be on the lookout for the follow up, Bayou Grise' in 2014!

"Don't leave. Please don't leave. You could kill me right here, right now. Death by your hands, Calla. Your touch I wouldn't fight it. Just, please, don't leave."

***Please note, book was gifted by the author in exchange for an honest review***

Soul Resurrected is the second installment of the Sons of Wrath series by Keri Lake and picks up right where book 1, Soul Avenged, left off. If you have yet to get a taste of this series, I suggest you get on that, like...yesterday. You can read my 5 star review HERE.

Logan, my dear sweet, stubborn, brooding, kind of an ass, Logan...

and you will too. I really enjoyed the growth of this character. I can tolerate the mega alpha male who's a bitter ass and makes the girls cry as long as I get a glimpse of his heart and soul that explains some things but doesn't just give him an "out". Logan is significantly damaged, he truly is but thankfully, our heroine, Calla, isn't a weak woman, nor does she take his shit simply because he's "hot". We need more of that, especially in this genre.
As mentioned above, I gave the first book 5 stars so you may be wondering, what went wrong? Well, nothing went "wrong". Soul Resurrected is very fast paced, action packed and will have your inner fan-girl hyperventilating. Logan, sold. Calla, sold. Anna, the resident gossip, sold. I tend to enjoy a great, even mix of urban fantasy and paranormal romance. In this case, it's heavier on the urban fantasy and while not necessarily a bad thing, it can interrupt the flow for me.This is just based on my own personal reading preferences mind you therefore it didn't weigh in on my rating.
Once the romantic aspect of the book started to reveal itself, I couldn't read fast enough. Logan, just...yeah. I only wish it hadn't taken so long to get there. Come to think of it, that may not be completely accurate either. Maybe it just seemed that way because I felt a bit, for the lack of a better term, overwhelmed with the first few chapters. It was a lot of information, characters, twists and turns coming at me all at once. I struggled to get a full handle on everything that was happening. Once I felt "settled", it was a fantastic ride. Ms. Lake has a quick wit and there is an underlining bitchy, snarky tone to her writing that I'm most drawn too. Logan came to life, his strengths, weaknesses and flaws, nothing was spared or sugar coated. Another fascinating aspect of this series is that the there are multiple relationships that pull you in, not just the highlighted romantic one, the bonds between the brothers especially.
I'm not sure which brother is next but I'll gladly take any one of them! Zeke, my poor Zeke. Gavin, what have you done?! I could go on and on... I only hope Ms. Lake writes quickly!

When Dallas resident Callie Taylor died young, she expected to go to Heaven, or maybe Hell. Instead, she met her fate early thanks to a creep with a knife and a mommy complex. Now she's witnessed another murder, and she's not about to let this one go. She's determined to help solve it before an innocent man goes to prison. And to answer the biggest question of all: why the hell did she wake up dead in Alabama?

As Molly straightened up, the man slipped the wire over her head and twisted it around her neck. She struggled, but he pulled the garrote tighter and tighter.
I was screaming at the top of my ghostly voice, for all the good it did me. I moved up behind the man and beat at his back with closed fists--fists that slipped in and out of his back without ever making real contact. He shuddered a little--clearly he was one of the very slightly sensitive ones--but he didn’t loosen his hands.
I reached up and tried to grab the wire, tried to pull against the pressure he was exerting on the wire and it did loosen for an instant. But only for an instant. The living have more control over solid objects than the dead do. I never resented that fact more than at that moment.
But I kept trying. I kept trying as Molly’s face turned purple, then blue, then black, kept trying even as she drooped in the man’s grip.
Then he loosened the wire and it was too late. I watched that wispy, light-on-fog life force slip out of Molly and move on to wherever it is that other people go when they die. I was glad she didn’t show up next to me as a full-blown ghost. At that moment, I wouldn’t have wished my impotent half-existence on anyone.
I couldn’t help thinking that if I’d been alive, I might have been able to save her.
If I could have cried real tears, I would have. As it was, I was sobbing hoarsely and calling the man every dirty name I could think of.
I was still cursing as I followed him around the kitchen. First he opened the pantry and pulled out a box of Hefty garbage bags. Then he grabbed a knife out of the block on the counter. And finally, he picked up Molly’s body and carried it to the bathroom.

The Alpha's Mate by Michelle Fox is told from Chloe, our heroine's point of view. I often struggle with first person because of the I this and I that's. This particular book handled it a bit better than some I've read in the past but at the same time, it stunted my investment in the story and the characters, mainly Jackson, the alpha himself.

Jackson came off as very mechanical to me and I think a lot of it had to do with the fact that I, the reader, never got a chance to step inside his head. He was horny. That's about all I got from him making for a very slow start. It wasn't until about half way through that the storyline picked up and his character showcased some actual personality. There is a kitchen scene between the two that added some much needed romance. The banter was light yet intimate and playful. I only wish there had been a bit more of that. I needed to be sold on the pairing and I never quite got there.

I liked the plot of the book, the mystery of the who and why, and how it all came together. There were a couple of clever plot points that helped balance out the obvious ones and some interesting supporting characters. Chloe isn't a weak heroine, and while I didn't quite connect with her either, she kicked ass when she needed to.

Along Came a Spider is a refreshing look at everyone's favorite fairy tales. A unique paranormal world where everyone has their secrets and no one is truly safe.
This was such an original story. My first one I’ve read in this series, I didn’t feel lost, so it can be read as a stand alone.
Trish Muffet and Nicky “Little Boy” Blue were nothing like the stories you read as a child. I loved how their stories were twisted into a great paranormal story for adults. The little details that were spread throughout really brought these characters to life, and kept their tales in your head at the same time. As the investigation what is going on with the seemingly new species of vampires, and the hunt for Vlad Dracula, you meet the tales from the previous books as well as new ones and I love the twists that Kate SeRine put on all of them. This is a series I'll be reading more of in the future.
